The new spray-on stockings for women aren’t as avant-garde as you might think. We had “leg make-up” during World War II because all silk was being used to make parachutes. Real silk stockings (no nylon yet) were almost impossible to buy, so we carefully smeared (no aerosol cans yet) the flesh-colored goop on our legs. But we had the added task of drawing a nice, straight line down the backs of our legs because in those days, all real stockings had seams.
