Albert Kohn, 86, lifelong resident, shopkeeper and legendary figure of 18th and Halsted. Beloved twin of Ben; dearest brother of Harry, Sam, Ruben, Ida and Anna; cherished son of Max and Edith Kohn; Al and Ben taught dance at the Aragon Ballroom for years. Max started a cigar business at 18th and Halsted long before Ben and Al set up the coffee shop. Al ran the shop for Pilsen residents, Chicago police officers and regular visitors until 2002. Al’s presence in the neighborhood, his distinct voice, unending generosity and unique perspective of old-time Chicago will be missed by all. For more on the “twins,” see the Chicago Tribune “Wake up, yell the coffee, with Ben and Al,” Jan. 29, 1989. Al rests in peace next to Ben, at Waldheim Cemetery, Fahrband Labor, gate 47A, Forest Park, IL.
