As a male who was of draft age during the Vietnam War, I’m perfectly willing to give both President Bush and John Kerry a pass on their actions of 30 years ago.

Bush, by using influence, dodged the draft by joining the National Guard just as I would have done if I had the same connections.

Kerry, after a tour of duty in Vietnam, protested against the war, just as I did back then. It was a useless political war in which we never should have been involved.

What either candidate did such a long time ago regarding Vietnam is not important now. Even the eyewitnesses who were there can’t seem to agree on exactly what happened.

The real question is how is it that we again find ourselves fighting a guerilla war in a country that posed absolutely no threat to our security?

Equally troubling, how do we best admit the mistake and get our brave soldiers home before more lives are lost?

Let’s apply the lessons from the Vietnam War and not distract ourselves over long forgotten details.
