“One Day Remains” is the first full-length album to come from former members of Creed, led by guitarist Mark Tremonti. As if to counter the sappiness of former lead singer Scott Stapp’s first solo song, the sappy “Relearn Love,” Alter Bridge introduces Myles Kennedy’s multioctave growl in a hard rock and metal hybrid that aims to grab the Soundgarden torch. But on “Open Your Eyes,” Tremonti’s monster hooks push back into slow-burning Creed territory. Sadly, Alter Bridge’s ballads follow the generic arpeggio guitar chords to distorted chorus that made Creed faceless even when multiplatinum. It’s on razor-sharp moments like “Metalingus” that the band comes into its own, out of grunge-lite and into the heavy.
