I’m sure I’m not alone in being revolted by the faux mitzvah trend as described in the recent article in the Q section. As if it’s not bad enough to throw a 13-year-old a formal dance party based not on personal achievement but instead on perceived materialistic peer pressure, these people have the gall to hijack a sacred religious tradition, as if a bar or bat mitzvah is really just a big party.
I can’t think of a worse lesson for children: a double whammy of something for nothing plus disrespect for others’ (and one’s own) religious traditions.
