On summer vacation, our then-7-year-old daughter, Marika, was using car travel time wisely, explaining the concept of “odds and evens” to her 4-year-old sister.

“Even numbers have pairs,” she explained. “See six? This one has a mate, this one has a mate, and this one has a mate. So it’s even.”

With five, she said, “this one has a mate, this one has a mate, and this one is all alone. It’s not even, so what is it?”

Her sister replied: “Divorced?”
