Jean Bartelme Brew, 88, formerly of Winnetka, died Friday, August 20, 2004 at her home in Hilton Head, South Carolina. Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, she was the daughter of Tonnies Tiedemann and Williamina Donaldson Bartelme; granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ferdinand Eugene Bartelme, President of the Keith Lumber Company and Mr. and Mrs. William Donaldson of Donaldson Department Stores of Minneapolis; cousin of Judge Mary Bartelme. A graduate of North Shore Country Day School and Vassar College, she also studied abroad in Germany during the 1930’s. She was very active in volunteer activities in Winnetka, her home of 61 years. The American Red Cross (World War II), the Infant Welfare Society, Winnetka Women’s Club, North Shore Country Day School and the Women’s Guild of Christ Church benefited from her long years of dedicated and enthusiastic service. She and her late husband, Robert Hosmer Brew, worked tirelessly on projects for Christ Church. Mrs. Brew was treasurer of the Women’s Guild and the Rummage Sale for many years. She was a superb seamstress and loved reading and dogs. She is survived by her daughters, Jean(‘Susie’) Bartelme Brew Schreiber of Winnetka, Illinois, Judith Hosmer Brew McDonough (David Myers) of Charlestown, Massachusetts, Joanne Brew Fisher (Al) of Clayton, Missouri; grandchildren, Laura Seyfarth Schreiber Hacker (Fred) of Sudbury, Massachusetts, Robert Tiedemann Schreiber of Washington, D.C., William Steadman Callander (Lori) of St. Louis, Missouri, Rebecca Brew Callander Liddy (Tim) of St. Louis, Missouri, Matthew Morgan Callander of Charlestown, Massachusetts, Conor Brew McDonough of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; great grandchildren, Robert, Duncan, Ian and Mikaela. A memorial service and interment will take place at Christ Church on the Hill, 784 Sheridan Road, Winnetka at 3 p.m. on October 16, 2004. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Hilton Head Humane Association or Hospice Care of the Lowcountry in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
