A Hoffman Estates man died early Tuesday in what officials said was an accidental drowning in a Schaumburg retention pond.
The body of Martez Matthews, 28, of the 1800 block of Jamestown Circle was found near a fallen tree in the steeply banked pond next to the Sheffield Towne subdivision, authorities said.
The Cook County medical examiner’s office ruled the death an accident, and toxicology tests are pending, an office spokesman said.
Matthews had awakened residents of a home on Stanley Court in the subdivision shortly before 1 a.m. and asked to use a telephone, said Schaumburg Police Lt. Dennis Carroll. The residents did not know Matthews but let him make the call, police said. They told police Matthews appeared to be either agitated or intoxicated.
Other area residents told police they heard a man about 1 a.m. shouting near the pond, Carroll said. When authorities arrived, they found the body, he said.
