A task force will lead a project to create computerized maps of environmentally sensitive areas in Homer Glen.

The impetus for the task force is a $15,000 grant to implement Geographic Information Systems technology. The grant is funded by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the U.S. Forest Service.

Trustee Margaret Sabo said the task force is seeking volunteers to help with the project.

“After information is gathered, volunteers will verify the data in the field,” she said.

Sabo said the maps would be useful in such areas as guiding development and construction of infrastructure.

“They can be used by the village to manage land and future growth,” she said.

The maps will identify areas that may require protection such as wetlands, creeks or watersheds.

A workshop will be scheduled to instruct volunteers in the process and their duties. Volunteers should call the village at 708-301-0632.
