For Darlene and Russ Jones of St. Charles, the key to winning big at a recent live auction to kick off the new season at Aurora’s Paramount Theatre was patience.
The couple bid a few hundred dollars here and there, but they were outbid for items such as a trip to New York to see “The Producers.”
They let pass a trip to Los Angeles to sit in on a taping of TV’s “Will & Grace” and backstage passes and tickets to see impersonator extraordinaire Rich Little.
But when the bidding started at more than $1,000 for the chance to hold a party in the theater itself, Darlene couldn’t seem to keep her hand in her lap.
She finally won the party package, which included catering for 50 and a disc jockey, with a bid of $2,100.
“He’s turning 70,” Darlene said as she nudged her husband. “We were talking about where and how to do his party. What could be better than this?”
