In Jill Zuckman’s Sept. 7 front page story, “Kerry enlists sharp tongues to attack Bush,” Cecil Roberts, president of the United Mine Workers of America, implies that George Bush was a draft dodger.

Bush enlisted in the Texas Air National Guard during Vietnam and qualified to fly combat jets. Flying these aircraft takes guts. I know. I was a pilot during the Korean War. Pilots aren’t wimps. Bush wasn’t one then, he’s not one now. The Guard could have been sent to Vietnam, where Bush would have likely flown in combat. He had to know that possibility when he enlisted.

Bush didn’t use clout to secure a desk job. He demonstrated his courage when he chose to fly. To suggest he was a draft dodger is a disgrace.
