Strack and Van Til recently opened an Ultra Foods store at 7520 W. Roosevelt Rd., Forest Park, 708-488-5750. The 71,000-square-foot market is part supermarket/part warehouse club: In addition to the familiar name-brand products, and the expected produce, meat, freezer and dairy sections, it also stocks jumbo sizes–a 6 pound, 10-ounce can of pizza sauce, anyone?–and customers bag their own groceries. The Forest Park store also carries many specialty Mexican items.
Heritage Foods USA, best known for its sales of heritage turkeys at Thanksgiving, has expanded its offerings in an effort to save fast-disappearing native breeds of lamb and pigs: Purebred Katahdin lamb from farms in Tennessee, Arkansas, Kentucky and Oklahoma, and purebred Berkshire pork from a coalition of farms led by Metzger Farm in Kansas, are among the initial offerings. Half a lamb or pig cut into its respective pieces found at the supermarket will be sold for $225 and $400, respectively, excluding shipping (about $30-$60).
