Robert A. Maloney’s Sept. 12 letter to the editor is illogical. He states that President Bush was not a draft dodger because he flew jets after entering the Texas Air National Guard. I define a “draft dodger” as a person who took some affirmative act to avoid being drafted into the military and, in this case, to avoid fighting in Vietnam. Bush applied for the Air National Guard, and his family arranged for him to be accepted into it, specifically because it would all but eliminate his chances of fighting in Vietnam.
What he did in the Air National Guard, while interesting, does not alter the fact that he entered the Guard for the specific purpose of avoiding Vietnam.
Thus, he is a draft dodger.
