In reflecting on the anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001, I found myself regretting our obsession with military aggression and retribution. If our country instead shifted its priorities so that our enormous wealth was used to ensure that every American was housed, fed, educated and medically cared for, we would be a very different America with very different values. And I wonder if others in the world might then regard us with less vitriol.
