Amy Allen, true to her vocation as a librarian, she encouraged everyone she encountered to read and learn how to use library resources. She was a true advocate for reading-which is the foundation for a good education. Children were her first love, but she knew the adults needed to be prepared in order to help them achieve. She encouraged the school clerks and anyone else who expressed a desire to go to college and earn a teaching degree. The majority of her years of teaching was at Hirsch Metro H.S., where she was a mentor, friend, big sister, substitue mother, counselor-whatever students or teachers needed. Her dedication to service was also evidenced at Gorham United Methodist Church, where she was a faithful member and officer for many years, before retiring to Atlanta, GA. She continued tutoring and became involved in various other ministries at Cascade Methodist Church in GA. During her life, Amy was very active in civil rights, voter registration and other community movements. She was a member of NAACP and worked with the SLC and PUSH groups. Improving one’s life through education and service was her purpose in life and she served WELL. She is gone but will never be forgotten for her mark has been left in the lives of many. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, 12 noon, at Gorham United Methodist Church, 5600 S. Indiana Ave., Chicago.
