Israel’s leaders, along with Israel’s uncritical supporters, like to claim that Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East. After reading “Police shut Arab election offices in E. Jerusalem; Israelis say sites not allowed in city” (News, Sept. 14), it seems that they intend to keep it that way. While demanding it, Israel’s leaders are preventing democracy for Palestinians. They prefer an undemocratic movement led by the most radical and intransigent Palestinians so that they can claim to have no negotiating partner.
