How sweetly comforting it would be to believe that a strong, paternalistic President Bush could keep us womenfolk and our offspring safe. That heroic (and sexist) myth, however, has little to do with reality.
The harsh truth is that Bush gave up his wholehearted pursuit of Al Qaeda for his quixotic endeavor in Iraq. He attacked a country that was no threat to us–stretching our military resources, both human and material, to a near breaking point.
With resources so depleted, homeland security needs go unfunded, cargo containers go uninspected and nuclear materials from the former Soviet Union go unsecured.
Moreover, my faux champion has alienated allies and invigorated enemies.
I trust that most thinking women will see through the immature bravura and insist that the posturing stop. Perhaps then we can work to undo the damage to our security that this administration has caused.
