Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

As the parent of a senior at Immaculate Heart of Mary High School in Westchester, I was quite upset when I read your article on the school (“Immaculate Heart pained; Noted all-girl school in Westchester has fallen on hard times and may have to close its doors,” Metro, Aug. 27).

I believe you did a great disservice to the school.

You presented many misconceptions and wrote nothing to discount them.

My husband and I are both educators and are very happy with the education our daughter has received and is receiving.

She has taken honors classes in all subjects since her freshman year.

Advanced-placement classes are offered, as well as classes for college credit through St. Mary’s University in Minnesota.

Our daughter scored a 32 on her ACT test, as well as a 5 on her AP test.

Many of her friends scored 31 and 30 on the ACT, and 4 on the AP test.

This would not have resulted with an “average” education.

IHM High School also helps those students who have difficulty learning, as well as the average student.

Any school that can provide for all these learning situations, despite its size, is one to be commended.

It’s easy to accept only the best students and talk about what a great school you are.

A school like IHM accepts a variety of students and does a great job.

As for the school being one-third white, one-third black and one-third Latino, I think that is a plus.

We live in a multicultural society.

What better way for our daughters to learn how to live and work in such a society than to be educated in one?

I hope IHM is around for many more years to educate young women.

I will do all I can to help them make this a possibility.
