It was no surprise that there has been an increase in commuting time in the Chicago area (“Chicagoland drivers see jam session grow worse,” Metro, Sept. 8). More workers are moving farther out from the suburbs into the exurbs and farther from their jobs. Moreover they choose to drive rather than take public transportation. The response by the government always seems to be to perpetuate the problems by spending even more money on expanding our highways, thereby putting more cars on the roads and creating more congestion and pollution. Public officials seem to have a bias against buses and trains.
The solution (besides controlling urban sprawl) would be to invest greater sums of money on public transportation. By making the trains and buses more convenient, reliable and frequent, especially during the off hours, more people would be enticed to use public transportation.
