Certainly there are numerous pragmatic steps the United States can take to increase its homeland security.

Installing barriers in front of the James R. Thompson Center is one concrete example.

But more broadly speaking, I think that the United States is too huge, complex and vulnerable on too many fronts to expect that all the hatches can be battened down. Our highways, coastlines, lakes, rivers, international borders, mass transit systems, airports and airplanes, nuclear power facilities, electrical power and water systems–and even such things as Chicago’s Loop area, with all its skyscrapers and traffic–are all potentially vulnerable to fanatics bent on destruction.

Therefore, besides taking practical steps, would it also make sense to brainstorm on steps the United States might take to decrease the rage that seems to exist toward our country? Are there any steps that might help get us off the target list or become less of a primary target? It seems worth pondering at least.
