The city is likely to gain a Walgreens but might lose a church that has been part of the community for more than three decades.
The City Council Tuesday night unanimously approved a preliminary proposal by Gemini Companies of Orland Park to build a Walgreens and drive-through pharmacy on 1.6 acres of the northeast corner of 127th Street and Ridgeland Avenue.
The developer has a contract to buy the entire 5.7-acre property, which is currently owned by The Stone Church.
The City Council still must approve the developer’s plans. The developer hopes to begin construction this fall and finish in the spring, said Ron Lowe, an attorney for Gemini.
The church is looking for a new location, though it will be staying at the site until it finds one. The developer will buy the rest of the property for further retail development once the church’s plans are confirmed. The 14,000-square-foot building will be red brick with a stone base and a gable.
