I recently lost my job after 15 years with my company. I am a 53-year-old single woman still making car payments and paying rent. All my life I believed that if you wanted to work someone would hire you. Guess that’s not true today.
Even though I know discrimination is against the law, in my search for re-employment, I have seen it in their faces many times. I have 15 years of management experience, but because I have wrinkles and no physical appeal, I do not even make it to interview levels.
As a man they would consider me distinguished and sexy.
But most of the employers I have dealt with look at me as if the Museum of Natural History should be my home.
I think people should be informed we do have experience and knowledge to offer, and we are less likely to take a leave due to pregnancy or babysitting problems. We are reliable, we do not go out to party quite as much anymore and we are responsible adults who need to work just as much as the next person.
America hates to see old people, especially when they are women.
