L.A. pop band Rilo Kiley have become the breakout indie act of the moment, propelled by an irresistible back story (band leaders Jenny Lewis and Blake Sennett are former child actors; Lewis moonlights with the Postal Service) and a sprawling, spectacularly assured album that justifies the hype, if sometimes only barely. “More Adventurous,” the group’s third release, is a whirlwind of horns, strings, R&B and brittle, cleanly produced pop that suggests everything from Darlene Love to Heather Nova. Lewis is a formidable singer (best demonstrated on the lovely “I Never”) and an equally impressive songwriter, though her unfortunate, Liz Phair-like habit of repeating the same line over and over in place of an actual chorus offers rare moments of laziness on an otherwise spirited disc.
