The murder of the fine guard at our state’s Capitol is a travesty (“Unarmed guard dies in Capitol shooting; Officials call for tighter security,” Page 1, Sept. 21).

That this man was put in a potentially dangerous position without the ability to protect himself or the Capitol and its occupants is unforgivable.

That Illinoisans must be some of the last people in this country to be allowed to defend ourselves and our families with the best means available cannot continue.

Trained guards and civilians must be allowed to carry concealed firearms. The experiences of at least 38 other states have demonstrated that we all will benefit.

This man did not need to die to prove it.
