As a son of a law enforcement officer who died in the line of duty, it is heart-wrenching to know that an officer protecting the state Capitol was killed because he was not given the opportunity to protect himself.
The tragic shooting is another example of how Mayor Richard Daley and Gov. Rod Blagojevich are wrong when it comes to firearms.
Another criminal gets his hands on a gun illegally and shoots an innocent member of our community and now the governor supports metal detectors in the Capitol (“Capitol gets detectors after deadly gun attack; Governor orders installation after killing of unarmed guard reignites debate over Statehouse security versus public accessibility,” Metro, Sept. 22).
News flash:
Metal detectors will not stop bullets.
It should be no surprise that states that allow the right to carry a firearm have much lower crime rates.
But I am willing to bet most of those states also allow law enforcement officers to carry weapons.
It is unfortunate, but criminals will always find ways to illegally acquire guns.
It is even more unfortunate that the citizens of this state cannot appropriately protect themselves because we have no right to carry firearms.
