Chicagoan Rebecca Much finished second in Monday’s junior women’s time trial at the cycling world championships in Italy. The 18-year-old former triathlete, who graduated from St. Ignatius earlier this year and attends Ft. Lewis College in Durango, Colo., covered the 9.78-mile course in 22 minutes 19 seconds, 5 seconds behind Tereza Hurikova of the Czech Republic. Much is the reigning U.S. junior champion in the road race and time trial events, and her silver was the first U.S. medal at worlds since 2001. Much wore a yellow armband to support Lance Armstrong’s cancer research foundation that someone had given her mom. “My mom gave it to me and said it might bring good luck,” Much told the AP.
