While many of his generation were intimidated at first by computers, not so Stuart Musick, who embraced the new technology from the beginning, said his wife, Judith. “He was very skilled at computer design and very inventive,” she said. In retirement, and in his free time during his years as a business executive, Mr. Musick relished the time he spent on his computer designing brochures, marketing campaigns or event invitations for family and friends. Mr. Musick, 70, a retired vice president of Leggett & Platt Inc., and a founder of Beacon Marketing, died of melanoma Friday, Sept. 24, in his Highland Park home. “His own father died when Stuart was 6, so for him to be a father was it,” said his wife. “It was one of the most important things to him, if not the most important.” The couple met at her cousin’s wedding and married seven months later in 1958. They then settled in Highland Park where they raised their two children. After graduating in 1956 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he majored in business and advertising, Mr. Musick joined the Army in a program in which he served six months and then became part of its reserves for 10 years. After his six-month stint, he joined American Photo Copy Co. and in the 1960s became head of marketing and sales. In 1972, he moved to Amco, where he became vice president. Leggett & Platt bought Amco about six years ago. He retired in 2002 as vice president in Leggett’s storage products division and then founded Beacon Marketing. Other survivors include a daughter, Meg Musick-Makeley; a son, Hugh; and four grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Winnetka Woman’s Club, 485 Maple St., Winnetka.
