Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

This summer I took particular note of the high incidence of unsafe bicycling practices seen around Skokie, Wilmette and Evanston, and I’m sure reflected over all of the Chicago area.

Many bicycles did not have either headlights or tail-lights, and bicyclists had no reflectors on their clothing or on their bikes. Many riders did not obey the rules of the road, such as stopping at stop signs or signaling lane changes.

Often these riders were on the wrong side of the road.

I have always been taught that when you cross a major busy intersection, it’s far better to get off your bicycle and walk it across since you have much more control. Particularly disturbing to me were the many times I saw not only people riding their bikes across the street but the times when people were pulling the little cycle attachments holding small children.
