A shooting suspect trying to escape police ran into a Catholic school Thursday, forcing authorities to evacuate about 140 middle school and preschool children from the building.
No children were hurt, and the suspect and a companion were arrested, police spokesman Frank Gonzalez said.
The chase began after the suspects allegedly opened fire on a driver in Hialeah, a neighboring city in Miami-Dade County, police said. The driver was not injured.
Police followed the suspects’ rental truck for blocks before it crashed into a house, police said. One suspect was caught, but the other ran, allegedly shooting at officers before running into Our Lady of Perpetual Help school, where police found him hiding in a bathroom.
The children returned to the school after the arrests of Tyonne Nelson and Collie Lee Williams, both of Miami. Charges are pending against the suspects.
