Almost every time Hinsdale Central’s P.J. Beuke touched the ball Friday night against host Lyons Township, the result was routine. Almost.
Beuke (16 carries, 67 yards) scored on a 27-yard run with 5 minutes 5 seconds left in the second quarter, then returned an interception 15 yards for a score on the next play from scrimmage to pace the Red Devils (8-0, 6-0) to a 21-6 victory that clinched the West Suburban Silver title.
“Their defense was great,” said Beuke, who sealed the victory with an interception on the Hinsdale Central 5-yard line with 7:10 to play. “They hit me so hard I couldn’t see straight, but I just found a seam on the touchdown run. On the interception, I read the QB well and got a good break on the ball.”
A 36-yard TD pass from Brett Morse (10 of 19, 96 yards) to David Code with 1:09 left before halftime put the Devils up 21-6.
Hinsdale managed only 56 yards in the second half, but its defense made the lead stand up, twice stopping the Lions (6-2, 3-2) inside the 10. Lyons managed 152 total yards; quarterback Nick Saraniecki was sacked four times.
