House and Senate negotiators refused to give ground Wednesday on a compromise to pass the Sept. 11 commission’s terrorism-fighting recommendations.

Rep. Peter Hoekstra (R-Mich.), chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, said that three days of meetings among aides proved fruitless.

Wednesday’s public session, the first involving lawmakers since the House and Senate passed their versions of the overhaul, produced no movement.

On Tuesday, the White House asked negotiators to take pieces from each bill but not include the House’s language on speedy deportations and handling of immigrants seeking asylum.
