There’s a reason Eminem has stayed out of trouble recently–he was scared straight.

The rapper told Vanity Fair in its December issue that facing a judge on assault and gun possession charges taught him to lay low. “Nothing woke me up more than standing in front of a judge, and my life is in his hands,” he said, according to an excerpt in the New York Post.

Slim Shady wasn’t exactly laying low Thursday in Manhattan when he launched his hip-hop channel for Sirius Satellite Radio, the Los Angeles Times reports. His Shady National Convention concert event drew Bono, Busta Rhymes, 50 Cent and others. Even Donald Trump was on hand for introductions.

The event led into Shady’s performance on “Saturday Night Live.” Viewers expecting the “Mosh” singer to raise a political ruckus didn’t get much besides the song itself. At the end, he held up a “Vote” sign.

Some viewers complained on the Web that Eminem was lip-synching “Mosh.” Clips of the performance show him lowering his mic for a beat while vocals still played.

But he later poked fun at Ashlee Simpson’s “SNL” screw-up as he rhymed on “Just Lose It.”
