Despite the Cubs’ disappointing finish in 2004, the biggest long-term loss for Cubs fans might be Steve Stone’s resignation. Stone not only analyzed every pitch with the depth and intuition of a big league manager, he bled Cubbie blue with every pitch. As a die-hard Cubs fan who couldn’t afford season tickets, listening to Stone’s broadcast was as much a part of the Cubs experience as Kerry Wood’s curveball, Corey Patterson’s stolen bases and Sammy Sosa’s home runs. His insight could not be overappreciated, and will be deeply missed.
