You have to love Los Mocosos, second-generation 21st Century bastard sons of Santana and War. They mix it up like the elders, but their recipe’s way more eclectic and varied — soul, salsa, R&B, swing, funk, pop, a little ska, a little reggae, hip-hop and rock. And quite frequently, they do it in the same song. These boys glide in and out of styles as easily as they code-switch: U.S. born Hispanics, they sing in English, Spanish and Spanglish, all as natural to them as breathing. Mercilessly political, Los Mocosos (“the snot-nosed kids”) use their lyrics to assert Latino arrival, question the president, question gender relations, question identity and never stop having fun.
