Tweed is ideal for the mad dash of activities between now and the end of the year. Invest in a piece or two and you’ll be a wintry chameleon–able to adapt to settings as varied as a meeting, a party at a swanky lounge or tea at the Drake.
I recently spent a few minutes with Cameron Silver, owner of the Los Angeles vintage shop Decades. Silver was traveling to boutiques around the country with a stash of Chanel suits from the 1960s–which means they were designed by Coco herself–and they looked as fresh and fantastic as anything stitched up this season. Only the price tags, which topped $6,000, were a deterrent. But high-end designers aren’t the only ones making tweed pieces. Contemporary collections such as Milly, Kay Unger and BCBG give a nod to tweed. My favorite attainable suit is from BCBG and has a jacket ($326 at BCBG Oak Street, 312-787-7395) with bracelet sleeves and frayed trim on the cuffs and collar. The hem of the skirt ($186) also is frayed. The cut is flattering and the tweed works with anything from denim to sequins. I’ll be getting quite a lot of wear out of this ensemble.
Here’s a styling tip on wearing tweed: Choose a brightly colored bag rather than a safe black purse. Teal, yellow and hot pink are all good options. Check out the collection of BCBG bags ($298-$696). They have all the cool colors.
