Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Tweed used to bring to mind a old headmaster in a rumpled jacket with suede patches at the elbows. For the terminally wealthy, tweed meant a Chanel suit for thousands of dollars, but for the rest of the world, tweed has been nowhere fashionwise.

But not this season. Tweed is everywhere, from the lowliest catalogs to the haughtiest fashion magazines to your neighborhood mall. There are tweed jackets, tweed handbags, tweed skirts, even tweed shoes and boots. A tweed jacket is probably the best way to modernize your fall wardrobe with something trendy that has staying power. Just make sure the jacket fits close to the body and is short.

The J. Crew catalog has one of the season’s best tweed jackets, a black and white Chanel knockoff for $228. The Paris jacket is collarless, with four patch pockets and outlined with black velvet. The Gap has tweed skirts with a ruffle at the knee-length hem, also trimmed in velvet, for $58, and tweed handbags, including a good-looking satchel in camel for $39.50. Chico’s tweed jackets come in many colors including orange and fuchsia and most are $158.

Wear any of these with your black trousers and turtlenecks, and you’ll be au courant.
