I read “Tribune special report: From child to bride” (Page 1, Dec. 12 and 13) with a mix of fascination, horror and gratitude.

It is deeply disturbing to contemplate these conditions that exist for young women in 2004.

I am grateful to have been born under my circumstances, both for myself and my daughter. What is more disturbing is that “the U.S. State Department is weighing whether educating girls into womanhood translates into its vision of reform in the Middle East.” Educating girls as opposed to armed conflict. What is the State Department’s “vision of reform”?
