Hoffman Estates officials are likely to allow voters to decide in April whether the village should continue spending funds to pursue its own ZIP code.

That was one of three advisory referendums that got first readings Monday night at a Village Board meeting.

Formal approval is expected Jan. 17.

Hoffman Estates has been pursuing its own ZIP code for at least 25 years, said Mayor William McLeod.

“We’re a village of 50,000, yet we use ZIP codes for Schaumburg, Barrington and other communities,” he said. McLeod said that without its own ZIP code, it is difficult for Hoffman Estates to make sure it receives its allocation of some taxes.

Also expected to be on the April 5 ballot are advisory referendums asking voters whether new billboards should be allowed along the Northwest Tollway corridor and whether nightclubs should be permitted within 1,000 feet of a residence.
