Reality TV in general may be on the decline, but “American Idol” is as hot as ever.

Tuesday’s premiere drew an average of 33.5 million viewers from 7 to 9 p.m, according to Nielsen Media Research. That’s the second highest-rated “Idol” ever, topping even the Season 2 finale featuring Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard.

“Idol” was so dominant that it outdrew the combined viewership of ABC, NBC, CBS, UPN and the WB, Fox said.

On Monday, Fox had warned of a likely decline in “Idol’s” ratings.

Guess the network underestimated America’s appetite for bad singers.
