The election in Iraq on Jan. 30 will allow the people to show their character and strength of resolve in creating a new equitable society for themselves. Creating that opportunity has come at great expense to us. The alternative is civil war and rule by tyrannical insurgents or Taliban-like clerical regimes.
It is hoped that Iraqis will accept personal responsibility for determining their own future. This first opportunity could be the last.
