This is regarding letter writer Brien Comerford’s “Praise zoos” (Voice of the people, Jan. 25). I am glad that he wrote about animal activists and zoos. But I think it might be time that we could do better.
Speaking as a compassionate volunteer at one of the local animal shelters, I am often overwhelmed with the stories of these lost or abandoned pets and question how we can better reach the public.
Aggressive, cruel acts toward animals should carry consequence. But why must we stop there?
Species of animals like elephants, lions, rhinos (the list is endless) that are poached in their homelands are, in many instances, “housed” here. Can we accomplish protecting these animals in a way that both promotes their well-being and educates the public of the importance of our natural world? Because, to me, if we aren’t doing the job of protecting these animals and promoting their utmost well-being, we aren’t too far from the homelands that allow their slaughter.
