The Cubs are kidding themselves if they expect to win the NL Central with Jeromy Burnitz as the right fielder.
Burnitz, 35, had a career year last year. However, he had that career year playing in hitter-friendly Coors Field. In Denver, Burnitz batted over .300. Away from Coors field, Burnitz batted .244. In 2003, Burnitz did not play at Coors Field, and his on-base percentage was a pathetic .299.
Burnitz does bring power to the Cubs outfield, but a much better option would have been to move the two prospects from Baltimore and a top prospect from the Cubs farm system to Tampa Bay for Aubrey Huff. However, Jim Hendry jumped on an overrated Burnitz instead of waiting on a possible trade with Tampa Bay.
