The Feb. 1 commentary on “Bush, God and the Union” cites President Bush stating that liberty is “God’s gift to humanity” and then determines that “such certitude is dangerous.”

Perhaps the authors forget that the language linking God and liberty comes not from Bush but from the Declaration of Independence, that “all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”
