Toss off those parkas and put on a grass skirt.
Oak Park resident and master hula teacher June Kaililani Tanoue is welcoming men and women of any age to her home for lessons in the dance of the Hawaiian people.
A native of Hawaii, Tanoue studied hula on the Big Island for 13 years before receiving the title of Kumu Hula (master teacher of the hula) in 2000. Since May, Tanoue has been opening her Oak Park home to people interested in learning about the dance and more.
“As a teacher, I have a responsibility to continue sharing the knowledge that I learned so the heritage continues about the Hawaiian people, the culture, the values,” Tanoue said.
A beginner’s class will start Monday. Both modern and ancient hula will be taught in the class.
