Rising star DJ Spooky gave a sold-out crowd a lot to think about recently with “Rebirth of a Nation,” his acclaimed multimedia remix of the racist 1915 classic “Birth of a Nation.” “It’s a digital exorcism, even though the evil side still wins,” he admitted. But those who went to the after-party at Sonotheque got to chat up Spooky (New York-based conceptual artist, writer and musician Paul D. Miller)-if they could get close enough. Some wanted to check him out, like photographer Rebecca Uhle and makeup artist Alfred Lester. Others were rapt. “He’s legendary,” said Chicago DJ Margaret Noble, who played that night and is pretty well-known herself. But a few were oblivious to his fame: Chicago improv actors Lindsay Verstegan, Phyllis O’Hara, Roger Peyton and Duane Toy-Loy. “Spooky? We’re here to hear Duane’s brother, DJ Darryl Toy-Loy,” said O’Hara. Darryl, fresh from New York, goes by Omsko. Who knew?
