An increasing number of online services offer Netflix-style mail-order video game rentals for a monthly fee. Here’s a list of companies that will end your search for cheap games and start your search for more free time.
– Redoctane.com, based in San Francisco, is the oldest video game rental service. Founded in 1999, it carries more than 2,100 titles renting anime DVDs and games for PS2, GameCube, PlayStation and Dreamcast.
Price range: $18.95 a month for two discs at a time to $39.95 for five.
– Gamefly.com, based in Los Angeles, rents more than 1000 Game Boy Advance, Xbox, PlayStation 2 and GameCube games.
Price range: $13.95 for one video game to $29.95 for three.
– Gamelender.com, based in San Jose, rents all the new titles but specializes in older games with 5,000 titles that include games for PlayStation, Game Boy Color, Nintendo DS, Nokia N-GAGE, Sega Dreamcast, Nintendo 64, SNES, Sega Genesis and NES.
Price range: $19.99 for two games to $34.99 for five.
– Gameznflix.com rents and sells DVDs and games for GameCube, PlayStation, PS2 and Xbox. It has east- and west-coast distribution centers.
Price range: $17.25 for three to $222 for eight games for 14 months.
– DVDavenue.com, based in Maryland, rents DVDs and games for PlayStation and PS2.
Price range: $14.95 for two to $44.95 for eight.
– Gamerang.com has more than 2,400 titles for PlayStation, PS2, Xbox, Nintendo DS, GameCube and Game Boy Advance.
Price range: $14.95 for one game to $35.85 for four.
– Gplay.com is in Oakland, Calif., and has more than 1,900 titles for GameCube, PS2, Xbox and Game Boy Advance.
Price range: $13.95 for one game to $29.95 for three.
– Numbthumb.com, based in Austin, Texas, has more than 1700 games for GameCube, Xbox, PS2 and Game Boy Advance.
Price range: $13.95 for one game, $21.95 for two.
