A volunteer citizens’ panel will advise the town on redevelopment plans at the former Sportsman’s Park and Chicago Motor Speedway site, after the Town Board this week approved creation of the body.

Town President Ramiro Gonzalez will appoint five residents to review proposals provide a written report of their findings. Each panel member will have “exemplary character” with strong ties to Cicero, according to the ordinance.

Last September, the town expanded a tax increment financing district to include the town-owned site, which officials hope to transform into a regional destination with a convention center, hotels and a facility for entertainment and athletics.

The 66-acre area includes the park, which the town bought for $16 million in July 2003, as well as parking to the north and west.

The facility soon will be demolished. In the last 1 1/2 years it has been used for a variety of gatherings. A party last month drew about 1,000 people. Admission to the event was $20, and proceeds went to a church in Mexico, according to a record of the one-day liquor license issued by the town.

Town spokesman Omar Duque said he did not believe any more events would be held at the site.
