A gregarious retired salesman who enjoyed sports, Edward L. Brubaker was a volunteer for several organizations, including the World Service Organization. “He loved life,” his wife, Shirley, said. “He had a wonderful personality and lots of friends.” Mr. Brubaker, 79, of Elgin, died of kidney failure on Tuesday, Feb. 1, in Kindred-Sycamore Hospital, Sycamore. The son of missionary parents, he was born in China and raised in Elgin. He graduated from Elgin High School and served overseas in the Navy during World War II. He received a bachelor’s degree from Manchester College in North Manchester, Ind. He worked as a salesman and became part-owner and senior salesman of Paragon Sales and Supply in Elgin. He retired at age 60. Mr. Brubaker was a member of the Elks Lodge 737, American Legion Post 57, the Elgin Current History Forum and the YMCA. He delivered meals to senior citizens for many years. He enjoyed gardening and fishing and was chair of several committees at Highland Avenue Church of the Brethren where he was a member. Other survivors include two daughters, Patricia Hernandez and Sally Vincent; two brothers, Gerald and William; and four grandchildren. A service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in Highland Avenue Church of the Brethren, 783 W. Highland Ave., Elgin.
