A Chicago man was charged Thursday with one count of unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon after attempting to bring a .22-caliber handgun into the Daley Center a day earlier.

Joseph R. Williams, 53, of the 5100 block of South Calumet Avenue in Chicago, was later released on $10,000 bail, said Bill Cunningham, a spokesman for the Cook County Sheriff’s Office.

Williams was arrested late Wednesday afternoon by sheriff’s deputies who spotted the gun in Williams’ bag as it moved through an X-ray machine. The bag also contained $18,900 in cash.

Williams told investigators that he runs a service that provides transitional housing for ex-convicts. He said he was at the courthouse to check the status of a Housing Court case of a property he was interested in, Cunningham said.
