The main focus of the current Social Security debate seems to be on the rate of return for an individual’s retirement savings.
What is lost in the current debate is that Social Security is not only a retirement system. Social Security also pays disability benefits to workers who become disabled. In addition Social Security pays survivors benefits to the children and spouses of younger workers who pass away.
Unless we understand the complete picture of what Social Security does now, we will never be able to come together on a plan for Social Security’s future.
